This project started in early November simply with a decision to repaint the dingy white walls of our art classroom at Champey Academy. Then we decided to paint the bottom third of each wall in a dark color to hide future grime and, for that dark color, we chose our ‘Champey red.’ Then we got the idea to add a strip of Khmer kbach, the traditional Cambodian design motifs which take their inspiration from nature. Our traditional painting teacher, Duong Saree, and several of her advanced students have attacked this assignment with great enthusiasm and we are looking forward to seeing the completed work — hopefully, sometime before the end of January.
